Who we are

The. Soete Laboratory has been named after Prof. Walter Soete since 1982, who was a director of the laboratory from 1946 to 1982. The laboratory is a research group of the Department of Electromechanics (Ghent University - Faculty of Engineering and Architecture) and consists of a team of motivated people.

Soete Laboratory is part of the Metal Structures Centre (MSC) and of the valorisation consortium METALS.

What we do

Soete Laboratory covers the education of numerous Mechanical Engineering courses at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Ghent University. Our courses range from structural analysis, over machine elements and welding to applied student projects. More information can be found under education.

Next to our educational tasks, about half of our activities concern basic research, while the other half consists of applied research as a service to the industry in the fields of weld testing, fracture mechanics, failure analysis, tribology and fatigue.

In the field of tribology our main area of interest is the behaviour of bearing materials for large-scale applications. Over the years we have gathered the necessary experience and developed the experimental facilities to simulate the proper working conditions in such large-scale applications. For the testing of machines, welds and components in fatigue we possess a large array of servohydraulic testers, including a modular test-floor to perform both standardised as made-to-order tests.

Soete Laboratory considers safety as a priority. More information on our safety policy is given here.

NEW Several PhD vacancies
Several openings for PhD students are available. We are looking for motivated young engineers! Take a look at our vacancy page for additional details. Please express your interest by completing Soete Laboratory's PhD application form.
  ie-award for Stijn Herregodts
26/11/2015 Stijn Herregodts won the best engineering thesis award presented by ie-net with his master thesis entitled "Intra-articular Pressure Measurement of the Tibiofemoral Knee Joint". More information can be found here. Congratulations!
  BIL/NIL lassymposium (in Dutch)
28/10/2015 On 24 and 25 November, the Belgian and Dutch Welding Institute organise their yearly welding symposium in Antwerp. More information can be found here.
The Belgian Welding Institute is one of Soete Laboratory's partners in the Metals Structures Centre.
The first Ageing Pipelines Conference (7-9 October 2015, Ostend, Belgium): a success!
10/10/2015 Soete Laboratory, Tiratsoo Technical and Clarion Technical Conferences organised the first edition of the Ageing Pipelines Conference. The conference took place in Ostend, Belgium from 7 to 9 October 2015.
Having received 102 attendants from 13 different countries spanning the entire world (including Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia), we can look back at a successful first edition of the conference. The event was attended by pipeline operators, regulatory bodies, manufacturers, research institutes and design consultants, thus attracting a balanced audience. This highlights the need for a better understanding of ageing infrastructures, which is becoming an increasingly hot topic in the world of pipelines.
Job opportunity: Business Developer at Ghent University: Metals and Metal Constructions
04/09/2015 Click here for more information on a vacancy as business developer in the field of metals and metal constructions.
Two new assistant professors starting on October 1!
02/09/2015 Soete Laboratory welcomes two new full-time assistant professors, Dieter Fauconnier and Stijn Hertelé. Dieter Fauconnier will initiate research in the field of numerical tribology with a focus on fluid-particle erosion and lubricated contacts. Stijn Hertelé's research activities will be directed towards analytical and numerical fracture mechanics, focussing on steel welds. Both professors will perform teaching activities in the fields of machine design, materials selection, tribology, fracture mechanics and project-based engineering courses.
4th International Conference on Fracture Fatigue and Wear
02/09/2015 The 3rd International Conference on Fracture Fatigue and Wear, FFW 2015, was successfully organised at Ghent, Belgium, in the period 27-28 August 2015. Photos of the conference can be downloaded here
11th International Conference on Damage Assessment of Structures
02/09/2015 The 11th International Conference on Damage Assessment of Structures, DAMAS 2015, was successfully organised at Ghent, Belgium, in the period 24-26 August 2015. Photos of the conference can be downloaded here
  Congratulations for Timothy Galle!
23/07/2015 We congratulate our colleague Timothy Galle for being selected as a finalist and winning the 2nd Runner-Up award at the 2015 ASME Pressure Vessels & Piping Conference, Boston, MA, USA!
Merge of departments in the field of electromechanical engineering
01/06/2015 The department of "Mechanical Construction and Production" (Soete Laboratory) has merged with the department of "Electrical Energy, Systems and Automation" and parts of the departments of "Industrial Systems Engineering and Production Design" and "Industrial Technology and Construction" to form one large department in the field of electromechanical engineering. This merge will stimulate new research ideas and foster opportunities for collaboration.
